Push on for driver-cell ban

Dennie Warren Jr accepted a challenge from the owner of Breakers Speedway Robert Campbell, to determine how well he could drive while talking on his cell phone.

Sections of the local public advocating the ban of cell phone use while driving received further ammunition this week with a University of Utah research warning of its dangers.

In a report published by that U.S university, the conclusion is that using a cell phone while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk, even if the driver is using a hands-free device.

The findings come at a time when the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) is beginning their Street Skills campaign, which focuses on Distracted Driving.

Inspector Adrian Barnett of the RCIPS Traffic Department told Cayman Net News in its June edition that the campaign would target drivers using cell phones on the roads.

Don't talk and drive warns RCIPS

The message to drivers is "Don't use your cell phone when behind the wheel." This comes from the multi-agency road safety StreetSkill campaign spearheaded by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, (RCIPS).

A campaign about the extreme dangers of driving while distracted is underway and will continue through August. Officers will be handing out information leaflets to drivers who they pull over encouraging them to consider that missing a call will not kill them.

Though using cell phones while driving is not a criminal offence, it can lead to charges of not being in control of your vehicle.

"Awareness when driving is crucial and I am asking all drivers to pay more attention when they are behind the wheel. Taking or making a call or even looking at emails and text messages is extremely irresponsible," said Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Ennis.

Fairfielder Aboard Listing Cruise Ship

Although Princess Cruises calls their Crown Princess cruise ship the "crown jewel of the Princess fleet," it seemed anything but to Marsha Hanna on July 18 after she witnessed firsthand the vessel tilt, causing several injuries.

Hanna, 59, a Sturbridge Lane resident, who was vacationing with her friend Martha Long, 60, of New Hampshire, was on the seventh of a nine-day western Caribbean cruise. The two women, who are both alumni of Roger Ludlowe High School, began their trip in New York, making stops at the Grand Turk, Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman islands. Port Canaveral, Fla., was the last port stop before returning to New York.

To Hanna this was her dream vacation. "That day, the sea was like a sheet of ice, so calm and so beautiful." She had just finished making a few phone calls to family members, discussing her vacation and wishing her sister a happy birthday.

Crisis Centre Director leaves behind a solid foundation

Estella Scott has decided it's time to move on from her position as Director of the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, but is confident that a sound foundation has been built for this charity.

As the first Director of the shelter for women and children in danger of domestic violence, Ms Scott feels that there is now a greater awareness of what the organization is and what it has achieved.

Having established the CICC, she then agreed to run it for two years, and ended up staying in the position for three years, during which time, she coordinated the community education programmes and the fundraising, as well as the day-to-day operations of the Centre.

"That's a lot for one individual," she said and admitted that she is tired, physically and emotionally.

Spectra to offer wireless air brake diagnostics with BSM

WOODBRIDGE, Ont. -- Spectra, a designer of manual and automatic brake stroke indicators, has inked a deal with a Canadian wireless provider to develop a remote air brake diagnostic and monitoring solution for both trucks and trailers.

Based on Spectra's proven brake sensor technology, the product will be coupled with the remote monitoring function of BSM Wireless' cutting edge vehicle tracking and fleet management solutions to ensure out-of-adjustment brake issues will be reported to maintenance in real time.

In addition to monitoring through the Brake Inspector, in-cab display module, the BSM interface will send an email alert in real time to the fleet maintenance department as well as the driver so that the problem can be dealt with immediately.

Brake problems on heavy trucks and buses is the number one safety and maintenance concern for operators and regulators throughout North America.

Retrial appeal to be appealed

Defence Attorney Keith Collins has instructions to appeal the decision of Chief Justice Anthony Smellie in a case of possession of cocaine with intent to supply.

The Chief Justice gave his reasons last week for rejecting an appeal on behalf of Elon Dixon. Dixon has been before various courts since 2003, when he was charged in connection with 150.4 grams of cocaine (5.3 ounces) found in his kitchen cabinet in an empty bottle of body building supplement.

Dixon has denied possession, maintaining that he did not know the cocaine was there. A bodybuilding competitor and fireman at the time of his arrest in May 2003, he was first tried in April 2004. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment.

He appealed to the Grand Court, where his conviction was overturned following successful arguments by Howard Hamilton QC, instructed by Mr.

Committee will handle international aid

Any international relief aid goods that come to the Cayman Islands after a disaster in the future will be managed by new sub–committee of the National Hurricane Committee.

The 2006 National Hurricane Plan details the activities of new sub–committee, the need for which became apparent through experiences after Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.

Committee Chairman, Auditor General Dan Duguay, said the Government had never really talked about how to handle international aid prior to Ivan.

"We didn’t have a plan for it," he said. "[After Hurricane Ivan] everything was ad hoc. We did the best we could."

The purpose of the new policy in the Hurricane Plan is to ensure an accounting and initial distribution procedure that accounts for all goods received and distributes those goods in a system that is fair, impartial and to those with the greatest need.

Travel Q & A

Q. Do you know of any organizations that cater to solo travelers interested in meeting others traveling on their own? I am 47.

A. Several services are available to people traveling alone who wish to meet up with like-minded travelers; many are Web-based.

For instance, AirTroductions.com allows its members to post their profiles and travel schedules and meet people with similar business or personal interests on the same flight, or at the same departure or arrival airport on a specific date or time. Even someone simply wishing to share a cab with another solo traveler can be put in touch with another member; all for a $5 fee. AirTroductions says it has signed up 15,000 members since its inception in September. According to its founder, Peter Shankman, some travelers are looking for a date and some for potential business partners, but others are simply looking for someone pleasant to sit with on a long flight.
