Cruise Caribbean, Avoid Tropical Storm Headaches

NORWALK, Conn., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Families who cruise the Caribbean this summer face a lesser chance of having their travel plans disrupted by tropical storms than those who book land-based vacations, according to Travelers Advantage, a leading national travel company.

Rather than committing to one destination, a cruise offers a dynamic, flexible itinerary that can adapt to weather conditions by substituting safe, alternate routes when appropriate. While land-based vacations can be affected by tropical storms, cruise vacations are merely re-routed -- so your family vacation adventure plans are not shipwrecked.

This summer, travel companies such as Travelers Advantage are offering a number of family-focused cruises to the Caribbean. The voyages will feature multiple days in port for shore excursions in popular destinations like Mexico, St.

Fairfielder Aboard Listing Cruise Ship

Although Princess Cruises calls their Crown Princess cruise ship the "crown jewel of the Princess fleet," it seemed anything but to Marsha Hanna on July 18 after she witnessed firsthand the vessel tilt, causing several injuries.

Hanna, 59, a Sturbridge Lane resident, who was vacationing with her friend Martha Long, 60, of New Hampshire, was on the seventh of a nine-day western Caribbean cruise. The two women, who are both alumni of Roger Ludlowe High School, began their trip in New York, making stops at the Grand Turk, Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman islands. Port Canaveral, Fla., was the last port stop before returning to New York.

To Hanna this was her dream vacation. "That day, the sea was like a sheet of ice, so calm and so beautiful." She had just finished making a few phone calls to family members, discussing her vacation and wishing her sister a happy birthday.

Couple will reply to message in bottle

LIKE a tale from a desert island fantasy, a message in a bottle has spanned more than 3,000 miles of ocean that separates the white beaches of the Cayman Islands with the golden sands of North Devon's own Westward Ho!It is hoped it will now also link its finders, Martin and Ruth Staddon, of Bideford with its senders living in America. The couple found the bottle a during a stroll on the Torridgeside beach and inside was the message from Erik and Nicole Landrowski of Illinois. The Landrowskis dropped it into the sea off Grand Cayman when they were married there two years ago!It was May 2004 when the couple and some 30 friends celebrated their wedding on Grand Cayman. Their message was launched from a boat while out fishing the day before the ceremony. They included their address in Elgin, Illinois and an e-mail address, inviting any finders to make contact with them.Martin and Ruth are now doing just that and hoping that modern methods of contact will bring a quicker reply!

E-mail money scams still a concern

Due to internet scams becoming more common the Financial Crimes Unit of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, (RCIPS) said it would like to remind the public to be extremely cautious when receiving unsolicited emails.

These scams often ask the reader to divulge bank details or invite the recipient to enter into a business agreement.

The FCU said that the most recent scam appears to be more convincing and plausible than most and asks initially only for proof of identity, telephone & fax number and a forwarding address.

The Unit said that although no one here had reported falling victim to this particular scam it had raised concerns that people could do so because the email in question is purportedly sent by a Barrister and states that the recipient is a beneficiary to a large sum of money in
Pounds Sterling;.

No Place for Secrets

My wife probably thinks I need to take medication because I freak out if she opens the mail I receive at home. If she does open my mail, it's possible I won't have a complete meltdown as long as she does not throw away the envelope the letter came in and places it on my desk.
